What is a promo code?

Promo codes (short for promotional codes, also known as discount codes, coupon codes, or offer codes) are alphanumeric codes that customers can enter during the checkout process to receive a discount on their order. They are commonly used to incentivise purchases, offering added value to customers and building loyalty among both new and returning shoppers. A coupon code can be applied to one-time purchases as well as to subscription products.

What are the benefits of using coupon codes?

Beyond saving money for the customer, coupon codes provide merchants with a valuable tracking tool. They are often incorporated into broader promotional marketing strategies to measure the effectiveness of campaigns or advertisements. For instance, merchants can create platform-specific codes to identify which platforms drive the most conversions or site traffic.

What are the main types of promo codes?

There are three primary types of promo codes:

  • Fixed amount discounts subtract a specific amount from the purchase total. Merchants can choose to apply these to all orders or restrict them to orders that meet a set minimum value.
  • Percentage discounts offer a certain percentage off the total amount. For example, a store might offer 15% off all subscription plans.
  • Shipping discounts offer reduced or free shipping. A brand might provide free delivery on select items using a promo code, similar to how Amazon Prime offers free shipping for members.
  • Merchants can customise promo codes by setting limits based on usage time frame, number of redemptions, customer eligibility (e.g. first-time customers or members), and whether the same customer can use the code multiple times.
